BEDS and PILOWS

Are you aware we spend one third of our lives in bed!

The sole aim of your pillow should be to support your neck in the ideal position. If you stand with your back to the wall you will notice that your head doesn't touch it. This is the gap that needs to be filled by the pillow. Fortunately this too happens when lying on your side to be about the same gap as that between your neck and the bed. If your pillow is too big your head is tilted up putting a strain on your delicate neck joints. Not enough support and your neck sags into the gap with the same result.

We toss and turn up to 70 times a night and lose about half a pint of perspiration, most into the mattress. Our mattresses have a lot to cope with and the real surprise is that they last 5-7 years in the first place!

(Remember that if you have a divan bed you cannot just change the mattress)

The sleep council has devised a simple bed MOT that they recommend should be done every year after the first 3-5 years.

· Is the bed 7 years or more old?
· Do you ever wake up with neck or backache?
· Is the mattress cover torn or strained?
· When lying in bed, do you feel springs or ridges under you?
· When moving in bed do you hear creaks, crunches or suspicious noises?
· Do you and your partner roll towards each other unintentionally?
· Is the bed too small to give an undisturbed night's sleep?
· Is the divan or base uneven or sagging?
· Are the legs and casters worn out?
